oh, so many things….
i'd like to know which dried foods taste better than others (by brand or home processed).
as has been mentioned previously, i'd like to know which grain mills are better than others and/or if it's worth the expense. where can you find a less expensive grinder, etc.
about water — more information about storing & purification. how long can water be stored before it 'goes off'? if stored in a large (blue) barrel, won't the water taste plasticy after months or a year+ in storage?

Future topic:
How necessary is it to be able to purify water in an emergency condition.

Away from home

I'd like to know the best order to start collecting and buying things. Do I do water, my emergency kit, or my 3 month supply? And, for people who don't live in Utah and don't have basements, where can we store our food?

I think this is a great idea. Would you think about posting items needed to make you own kits; that would be a fun and motivating activity for a group of friends in the preparedness mode.
Recipes are also deeply appreciated.
We would like to see a few more items available to groups on the "minimum needed" list. We have alot of older folks who just can't purchase large items, so we're hampered a little. Absolutely love the sight. Thanks.

I'd like to see some discussions on long term power backup options and some tips on how to store for the longer term, i.e. redundancy equipment, components and spare parts. I would like read a list of typical hazards that a person may want to consider while storing communication gear, lighting, transportation, water pumping motors, other energy-based equipment. For instance, just how long will the components in an unused, transistor-radio really last if it is on a shelf at the summer cabin?

Everything everyone said so far is great! I'd like to know exactly how to store food – I was told it should be an inch off of the floor and away from walls? How and when do you rotate food? What do you say to your spouse who thinks you're nuts for doing all of this? Maybe most importantly, what are some of the things often forgotten/overlooked!

I would like to see community supports started. Link those of same minds in the same community.

This is a great idea! Thankyou. I would like to see good storage room layouts. Thanks!

Currently my biggest challege is water storage – both in volume and duration:
What is the best way to store?
How long can it be stored for?
Best way to check for safety?
Best place to store?
How to purify?
etc.

I would like to see recipes for both wheat and wheat flour. I ordered granola when it was on sale last month for the group special and was excited to see a granola pancake recipe that uses wheat flour and sounds delicious. Can't wait to try it!
Thanks!

I would love to see a checklist for a 1 year supply, including EVERYTHING needed to survive for a year- cooking oil, propane for a stove, maybe even toiletries. This would of course include items you sell, but also ones you don't. I'm having some trouble figuring out what I need to complete my storage for my wife and myself, and this would help immensely.
Also, some basic recipes would be helpful (that use basic items of food storage). I'm not sure how helpful it would be to include freeze dried type items since I don't have any of these.
Thanks :)

Of interest would be rotating food storage – especially focus on what to do when you open a pail of wheat or dry milk, etc. – ie. how long do you have to use it, how to store it efficiently while you are using it, and so on.
PS The new site is very nice – clean, not cluttered! Easy to focus on. Thanks for all the hard work!

I teach Disaster Preparedness for Families as a 10-12 hour course, covering types of disasters to water purification/storage, sheltering in place and food prep. I would like to see more on the inter-relationships between nutrition and survivability.

A picture/line drawing heavy article on slaughter, prep, and processing of a beef.
Pictures starting just after the beef is put down. Article starting with any pre-slaughter actions needed.
Pictures of placement of the spreader bar, bleeding, skinning, breaking down into easier to handle large pieces, carving of the large pieces into steaks, roasts, etc.
Each picture should have a good written "this is what we're doing where" caption.
THEN how to long term no-refrigeration store the beef. Corning, drying, canning, etc.
All of that in one article would be a tremendous asset. AND the information will work for deer, pigs, sheep, most any 4 legged critter.

I would like to learn how to store and acquire prescription medication for more than 3 months. I would also like to learn about storing for 1 gluten free person in a home of non-gluten free people. How about feeding the dog with existing food storage?

I'm concerned about how to adjust my home food storage… I am insulin resistant and just got diagnosed with PCOS as well. I'm not supposed to eat rice, pasta or other high-carb foods. I'm at a loss as to how I can store food that I can eat and not get sick.

Hooray! I'm so excited for this new blog.

I was really excited to find out about your products. I'm working on being prepared, but have a long way to go to get there with our family of 8, plus my parents are moving in later this year…It's a challenging task, but I look forward to filling the pantry!

Dear Emergency Essentials:
Subject: “Ready to Go Packs”
As a wife, mother of 3 and retired Girl Scout – I try to keep my family ready for any and all emergencies.
Sometimes it can be difficult. Especially in today crashed economy. When food prices at the grocery store change drastically from one day to the next. So I have been stocking up on canned goods & dry goods- to be ready in the event of a natural disaster or even a flu pandemic emergency hits my area. I have been buying (canned freeze dried food) from you as well. A little at a time. It lasts so much longer than canned food in jars do.
If your family is on a tight budget like mine is- you can still create your own travel emergency packs (over a decent period of time). So I did. It’s nothing fancy- but it works. ? I have always wanted to keep a bigger pack by my front door too. But every time I stock up on bottled water my kids empty it. LOL
I keep an small emergency pack in a (gallon sized Ziploc bag) in each of our cars and in my kids cars too. There are space blankets, rain ponchos, matches, dust masks, a functioning lighter, dryer lint- (in smaller zip loc bag) for starting a fire, flash lights (change out batteries every 6 months), candles, glow sticks, germ-X, granola bars, peanut butter-crackers, strong twine to hang up a blanket or poncho from under a tree for a shelter, band-aids, gauze, medical tape, Tylenol, Ibuprofen, duck tape, sanitary napkins, toilet paper or Kleenex . It can be helpful and is always a good idea- if you carry a pocket knife with you in your purse where ever you go, or any kind of medicine you can’t leave home without.
This can be a fun enterprise for your whole family to do together. ? Having this “Ready to Go Pack” already in your car is a comfort to have.
Sincerely,
Darla, Texas

I would like to hear your views on how to deal with neighbors that have not prepared and come to you for help.

Hi….I need to learn the several ways to store water and make it safe. How to make a rain barrel. How to chemically treat water, how long can water be stored before it must be treated. How much water is required for a month for two people? How to factor water usage into my dried and dehydrated emergency supplies and cooking needs. All things water related. This is my greatest concern. barbara inda boonies.

I think a great topic to discuss would be the use of MREs and other emergency type rations as part of a family's overall storage plan. This could include discussion on palatable flavors, what is popular, costs, shelf life, and ways to use the items that will allow family members to not turn up there nose if the need to use them comes around.

I would love to see some recipes to go with your prepardness items.

How about basic survival of the land…sleep safe and warm, build a fire, trap and eat wild plants and animals, identify and/or purify suitable drinking water, etc. Should be specific to the region, such as Southwest, Northeast, Central, South, etc.
