Mom and daughter making a batch of cookies in the kitchen

Emergency food is essential. It’s designed to have a long shelf life and tastes great even years after purchasing it.

Sometimes people are unsure of which emergency food supplies they should stock up on. We suggest stocking up on essentials, such as milk, eggs, and butter because many recipes require these basic ingredients. These items also work as substitutions for other ingredients.

As long as you have the essentials, you can keep your family fed.

In addition to stocking up for disaster situations, emergency food also works great for regular use in the kitchen.

It is a budget-friendly option for meal planners.

Take some time to look through these examples of delicious recipes that can be made using emergency food.

The Essentials

We always recommend stocking up on essentials, such as flour, sugar, and shortening. These will always prove useful.

The difference between buying a bag of flour or sugar at the grocery store and buying Emergency Essentials products is that you are ensuring you have fresh essentials for years to come.

For example, a #10 can of Emergency Essentials® White Flour has a shelf life of up to 25 years. The bag of flour at the grocery store is not designed for long-term storage.

You never know when you’ll face an emergency, but having unopened #10 cans of Emergency Essentials will give you peace of mind.

It’s better to stock up on them today while it is on your mind than risk a future without them.

Powdered Dry Creamer

Powdered coffee creamer is an excellent choice not only for emergencies, but also for regular use.

It is a budget-friendly option that goes a long way, and it’s very versatile. In addition to using it for your coffee or tea, you can use powdered creamer in a number of recipes in place of dry milk.

Homemade Cappuccino Recipe

You can make this delicious homemade cappuccino for the whole family using your emergency food supplies.

Simply mix 1/2 cup dry milk powder, 1/2 cup instant coffee, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup dry creamer.

Powdered Milk

If you suffer a power outage, your fresh milk will go sour in the fridge. But, if you have powdered milk in your pantry, you can make up a glass of delicious milk using just powdered milk and water.

If you are going camping, it is much easier to take powdered milk with you than fresh milk.

Plus, many recipes call for powdered milk.

Emergency Essentials® Instant Nonfat Dry Milk is 100% real skim milk and has a shelf life of up to 20 years.

Simply add water to reconstitute the eggs.

You can also use it to make traditional scrambled eggs or in any recipe calling for eggs, including baking.

Sugar Cookie Recipe with Egg Powder

We used Ready Hour products to test this Food Network recipe from Alton Brown for Sugar Cookies.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside. Place butter and sugar in a large bowl of an electric stand mixer and beat until light in color. Add egg and milk and beat to combine. Put mixer on low speed, gradually add flour, and beat until mixture pulls away from the side of the bowl. Divide the dough in half, wrap it in waxed paper, and refrigerate for 2 hours.
  2. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  3. Sprinkle the surface where you will roll out the dough with powdered sugar. Remove 1 wrapped pack of dough from the refrigerator at a time, sprinkle the rolling pin with powdered sugar, and roll out the dough to 1/4-inch thick. Move the dough around and check underneath frequently to make sure it is not sticking. If the dough has warmed during rolling, place a cold cookie sheet on top for 10 minutes to chill. Cut into the desired shape, place at least 1-inch apart on a greased baking sheet, parchment, or silicone baking mat, and bake for 7 to 9 minutes or until cookies are just beginning to turn brown around the edges, rotating cookie sheet halfway through baking time. Let sit on baking sheet for 2 minutes after removal from oven and then move to complete cooling on wire rack. Serve as is or ice as desired. Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.

Note: In the case of these cookies and other similar recipes, it is better to reconstitute the powdered eggs first because the eggs are fully mixed into the creamed fat sugar base before the flour is added in the final step.

Butter Powder

Butter is a must-have for cooking and baking.  With Emergency Essentials® Butter Powder, you can enjoy the rich flavor of butter even during a blackout.

Reconstitute it and use it as you would traditional butter – spreading on bread or popcorn.

It can be used as a substitute for real butter when baking. Traditional butter is 90% fat. Since ours is dehydrated, it only has 50% fat content – meaning the texture will be a little different and will lack in volume when you swap it 1:1.

Emergency Essentials Honey Crystals #10 Can next to a bowl of honey with a honey dipper.

Honey Powder

Honey, as a natural sweetener, is an excellent substitute for sugar. Emergency Essentials® Honey Crystals make it even easier to use honey in place of sugar because you don’t have to worry about stickiness or it going bad.

Add it to your coffee or as a substitute for sugar when baking.

We recently received a message from one of our followers who used our Honey Crystals when making cinnamon rolls. In her words, “It was amazing!! They rose up so big and were absolutely delicious!”
