With road trip season coming up it's important to remember to pack a few items that could be helpful in an emergency.
The following is a recommendation of items to put in an emergency car kit:
• Water for drinking
• Food and snacks (high energy snack bars are excellent because of their ability to withstand most car temperatures)
• Flashlight with extra batteries
• First aid kit with burn care dressings and gel
• Sanitation and sundry items including soap or hand sanitizer
• Maps and a compass
• AM/FM radio - we recommend having a radio with more than one source of power, or hand crank radios
• Chemical lightsticks are recommended because of their safety
• Road flares
• Candle with windproof/waterproof matches
• Emergency blanket or sleeping bag
• Extra clothing
Some other useful items to remember:
• Jumper cables
• Car repair kit
• Try to always maintain at least one-half tank of gas
• Cell phone to report any emergencies
• Fire extinguisher
• Paper and pencil for leaving notes
• Toys and any other special items for children
• Books and games for entertainment

Definately need to add road flares to my car kits, but it's nice to see a realistic list of needs. You can never be too safe!

Excellent article.
I very much second the emergency glass breaker Vince brought up !
They should come standard with cars.
Given the severity of many auto crash wounds I recommend at least one
QuikClot trauma sponge for massive wounds until help arrives

Thanks for the ideas! I'm working on this this week. And maybe a kit for my husband to keep at work.

These are all great suggestions. One important item you left out is an emergency glass breaker in case you find your car submerged in water. In Florida we have a lot of canals along our roads and it is sadly common to hear of a car that went into a canal and the occupants drowned. For those of us that recognize the importance of driving safety we should all have an emergency car kit like this!

Thank you for the great ideas! I had some of these items in my car already, and you just helped to add to the list :). I always try to stay prepared for any situation. Thanks again for posting, and Happy Earth Day!

We love having our car kit. It helps us to feel at peace while we are out and about. The advice you gave as to which one to choose in relation to our extreme weather conditions was also very helpful! Thank you!

Oh my goodness, this is SO good to have! I can never think of anything that I need until I am on the road and don't have it!

Great list! We also keep a small camping shovel that folds up. For digging out of the snow or mud. It also comes in handy if you have to go to the bathroom off the side of the road.

Thanks for the reminder, I tend to procrastinate and I know and need to do better. Sometimes I think about the preparedness at home but tend to forget about when you are on the go.

Thanks. I am lacking in the radio. Also liked knowing about the quick relief stop bleeding kit from one of the comments. Thanks,

Just found your website. Love the ideas. Will be searching through for more.

Thanks for posting. We're doing a local group planning for hurricanes and tornadoes by having your car prepared, perfect timing!

I have added two small packets of Quick Relief Stop Bleeding Instantly powder to my first aid kit. Yes, it's a bit spendy, but the only time you need it is when it saves your life.
I have also added some insect repellent and a tube of Stop Itch that relieves the discomfort of insect stings and bites. They won't necessarily save your life, though there are some life-threatening diseases spread by mosquito bites, but they may save your sanity.

Thanks for the reminder! I always seem to forget the first aid kit & those types of things in the car when we leave for vacation with all the hustle and bustle. Love the blog! Thanks again!
