You’ve got your holiday meals planned, and your oven is ready for the turkey. But, have you considered how you’d cook all your preparedness food during an emergency? With these ideas, you’ll be able to cook with confidence!
Many years ago, I decided I’d try cooking my very first turkey. It was just a week before Thanksgiving and some good friends of ours were moving and I wanted to give them a great memory and a home cooked Thanksgiving meal. I was mortified to cook my own turkey, I fretted over my mashed potatoes, and I can’t even begin to tell you how I worried over the gravy. Despite my distress, the meal turned out wonderful. The stoves that were mentioned in this article were designed for outdoor use and can cause problems if not used in a well ventilated area. Your propane stove/oven was most likely designed for indoor use so you wouldn't have any of the ill effects that using an outdoor camp stove could create.

My regular indoor stove/oven has run on propane for the last 25 years. We have used it day after day, left the oven on for hours and hours with NO ill effects. Now we DO live in a drafty old farm house, but when be bought it, there was NO mention in the directions that we should used caution or ventilate the area when the stove is on.

The Volcano looks like it would be a great addition to my preparedness pantry. I have started storing charcoal after reading your blog.

S Benard – Propane should only be used in areas that are well ventilated. There are some items, like the Mr. Heater Propane Heaters that are indoor safe because they have a low oxygen sensor and a tip over sensor so if the amount of oxygen in the air reaches a low enough level or the heater gets turned over, it will turn off.

Question:
I've read that using propane fuel indoors can create toxic fumes. Is it true that propane must be used only outdoors?

This is the area that I still feel unprepared. Fuel and a camp-style oven will be my next purchase.

My wife and I are very interested in the Volcano Stove. Saw 1 last year at Costco and am waiting for it to show up there again. We won't hesitate to buy this time. Has anyone tried a Dutch Oven with this?
