I would have to agree with Lynn, cards and board games, during the WInter months we tend to play those more often, along with our supply of hot cocoa (for the Chocolate craving).

When power was out in Toronto for a few days, our neighbourhood's luxury was a coffee shop (free or donations to the red cross accepted) set up on our front lawn. My brother brought his westfalia started it all, but we spread out as more goodies and people arrived. It was fun for everyone and helped build a sense of community as well as keeping everyone calm. Thank goodness we were prepared!

My other luxury, I suppose, would be a telescope. When the power is out, there's nothing better, or more reassuring than seeing the glory of the universe.

Don't know if it an actual luxury but I keep some paint sets for the kids [ easily washable types though], a couple of ball in a cup games, a couple a extra little pocket knives for whittling and some Glade air freshener sprays [ when stuck indoors [ or temp. outhouse ] for extended periods of time especially on damp days it can bring a sense of "civilization to the house :].

I agree with Mother of Chaos, and I'm NOT laughing. Knitting can be very relaxing. Plus, it requires no power, is small, and portable! Think I'll have to add some supplies to my kit. :)

I have some "goodie bags" for the kids, with inexpensive toys, decks of cards, hard candies and such.

And (now, stop laughing) I have knitting projects for us, super-simple for the kids and mildly entertaining for myself (seriously, stop laughing!) – I can survive ANY disaster, even the Zombie Apocalypse, if I have my knitting with me…

Since I cook and bake from scratch, having the ingredients to to make delicious and satisfying meals and desserts would awesome. Plus, being able to wash and dry our clothes in a relatively easy manner.

I consider a good shave a luxury that adds "civilization to the situation". I have a nice stockpile of double-edge razor blades (far better than the latest multi-blade monster) along with several bottles of Old Spice aftershave and a nice stack of shave soap. A little hot water, and I'll still be able to start the day with a smooth, comfortable shave.

We love to play as a family. So if the power is out, and the Wii games or computer games are not possible — only because we are too lazy to bring the generator out — ha ha — then we are well stocked with board games and card games. Each Sunday afternoon we play one of these games to find out which ones we like the most and how much fun they really are! But of course, a well stocked pantry shelf of party foods to go along with those games are always helpful too. We bring those out as well each Sunday afternoon. You know — it helps with the rotation of our supplies and someone's gotta try them out to which is the best tasting. Right? ; D
