1 1/2 C
Sourdough Starter (purchase, obtain from a friend, or make your own)
2 1/2 tsp

  1. In a large bowl, combine 1 cup flour, (dry egg powder if you’re using that), sugar, salt, and yeast. Add milk, (egg, if using fresh) and margarine/butter.
  2. Stir in sourdough starter. Mix in up to 3 ¾ cups flour (depending upon the humidity where you are) to make a knead-able, somewhat firm but not hard dough.
  3. Turn dough onto a greased surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes.
  4. Place in an oiled bowl, turning once to oil the surface.
  5. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and allow to rise until doubled in volume—about one hour.
  6. Punch down, form into round loaves, and place on greased baking sheet.
  7. Allow to rise for another hour until doubled in size. Brush tops with wash of beaten egg and 1 tablespoon water. Sprinkle with chopped onion if desired, or with sesame seeds if you prefer.
  8. Bake at 375° F. for 30 minutes or until done.
  9. Gently remove to cooling racks and allow to cool before cutting.
