In response to :

"What preparedness topic or question would you like discussed on our blog in the coming months?"

I would like to read more information about what grocery store foods would best to have on hand in my house at all times to have a balenced seven day supply of food in case of severe conditions where travel would be limited or stores would be closed. Perhaps some items that would not require too much cook time if portable camp stoves were used for cooking in the event of a power outage.

Good luck on the new blog !

I would like to see some discussion on properly storing emergency preparedness food. I know that you're supposed to keep them at certain temperatures (under 70 degrees?), but what do you do when you live in the South and have no basement?

I would like tips on large-family emergency kits for hurricane evacuation. We live on the east coast and expect to have some strong storms this year. I would like to be prepared.

I started a garden this year and my husband wonders if in the long run we are really saving money by doing it ourselves by the time we pay water and all the cost of items to preserve the food. I would love some advice on the cost efficiency of a garden. Thanks so much! :)

I would like to learn about how to make your own compact 72 hr kit. Most of the ones I have tried/read about end up being so large, that it would be hard to take with you.

Because of my experience in California Earthquake country, and with the wild fires, or any "quick exit" emergency, I have found that having an emergency pack for each member of the family is a life saver. These packs should be kept near each exit, so that means wherever there is an exit, save up enough money to buy what you need, and have them there. Be sure to have a couple in your vehicle too—you never know when you will need it. I call it my "get up and go" pack.

One thing I would like to see on this site are fire masks so you can breathe and see if you are in a fire. Smoke can not only make it impossible to see, but can smother you.

Water is of major importance to you. The small packs on this site are wonderful. You can even freeze them, and if you have a long walk in the heat, they will keep you cool if used like an icepack. Once they have melted, you will have cool water. I always keep a lot of water in my car for all purposes, and in all size containers. If the water has expired (water does expire), don't throw it out. Use it for flushing the toilet, washing yourself, watering plants, etc.
I know this is too long now, so I will stop here. All I have to say is, have emergency reserves no matter how small the amount. It could save your life.

I would love to see different idea's for using food storage regularly…..that way it would be rotated….recipes, monthly storage idea's, I don't want a storage that you just buy and store and forget, I want to use/rotate it.

I would like to learn how to actually USE my food storage. I want to be familiar with how to use the long term storage and incorporate it more in our weekly meals so I can rotate things and so I can be familiar with how to make things tasty with food storage items in case we fall on hard times and HAVE to use them.

Thanks!

While preparing for Y2K, I looked for a Katadyne water filter like the ones we used in West Africa. I couldn't find one then but have since purched one from Emergency Essentials. What a comfort to now have a safe and effective way to treat our water if the need arised. You wouldn't believe the water (sometimes mud) we filtered over there and never got sick.

I began to buy freeze dried food because as a single person, I got tired of throwing out unused milk, fruit, and veggies that had gone bad. Now I just use it as I need it – no waste!

I would love to see some info regarding essential oils in our first aid kits. Lavender has about 100 uses, and you would only need a small 5 or 15 ml bottle of it. No one, that I know, has discussed this natural alternative for our kits. Frankincense is another oil that we could carry -its healing properties are unique.
Thanks

Being raised in central Florida, we've "hunkered" down quite a few times. Having 7 cats and dogs, something that we always keep in our "hurricane box" are glow sticks. The kind that you can hook together. As soon as the storms start we put one around each animal's neck as a collar so that if they have to go out to the bathroom, we can always locate them. What a relief to be able to see them when they go outside.

I have used some of the products on the new website and they work great. The prices are cheaper then in most of the stores in town. Keep up the effort in having people prepared for anything that may happen. Thanks for everything.

I love this site. First I would like an idea of how to keep my food cool. I live in hot and humid Florida. With electricity I attempt to keep things cool, but if the worst happens I worry about the H&H; ruining my food. I am trying to can as much as possible. Also easy recipes for the freeze dryed and dehydrated foods. Water purification is also a biggie.

Thanks,Hisway

What a great site!

I am interested in learning to use a sun oven!

Sprouting and incorporating living foods and greens is also important, as well as drying and saving my herbs and garden produce and harvesting seeds from my heirloom plants.

Inventory, organization and rotation ideas for storage and emergency supplies would be wonderful!

It would be awesome if you had a weekly "hands-on" project, maybe offering sample sizes of the larger cans, so that we can try making our own foods and test them with our family. Maybe include a recipe contest.

Besides foods, another project could be a hiking/camping challenge to try out 72-hr kit supplies, sanitation, water purification.

You could offer beginner, intermediate, and advanced level projects in a variety of areas, one per week/month. Everyone who reports successfully completing the challenge could enter their name on a list and give their comments on what went well and what they'd do differently next time. That way everyone can learn from their experience.

Thanks for the new blog! I love reading and learning more about preparedness. We are moving in to Tornado country and have never dealt with that before, so I really want to get my emergency kits updated. I am interested in learning more about maintaining communications during power outages, and also about ways of cooking when there is no power/gas, such as sun ovens and other means.

So glad you're blogging now! The sub-tropical climate of South Florida has us facing problems of heat & humidity in trying to store food. PLUS, we also face unique challenges (such as hematodes, sandy soil, and different growing seasons)in growing our own foods. I'd love to have you address such issues as are found in climates other than Utah and other northern states. Thanks!
