Please comment on the best emergency means of cooking meals if we have no electricity or gas available.

Thanks.

We always wonder about the shelf-life of the things we have stored. We always try to "date and rotate" but it would be nice to know when it's getting to the point of "use it or lose it". A brief article about longevity would be nice.

I would be very interested in seeing some discussion and recipes about how to incorporate my food storage in my family's daily food consumption. In particular, I would love to see some recipes that use the freeze dried foods (especially the meats) as this looks like a good item to add to my food storage. I'm just not sure how I would use it, so I would love some ideas.

In response to Janice's Comment: "Since we live in Arizona, we find it difficult to find storage places that are cool enough for proper storage. How can we keep our storage cool in hot climates? Most homes have no basements."

Why not store underground? Build a root cellar. Probably on line there are instructions. Do a web search to find them.

We've begun our personal plan for emergency preparedness by purchasing a 3 day emergency kit plus a few extra items. By dividing all the items between two backpacks and our two cars, we are both prepared no matter who is where. When we travel together, both packs go in that car.

In addition, we are finalizing a longer list of items we need for long-term self-sufficiency. We will obtain those items, little by little as we have funds available.

I would like to see how using your food storage isn't just for emergencies but for other little changes in your life. Right now I am using mine because we are moving and we now have the finances available to stock up again after we arrive at our new home.

In response to Lisa B.'s Comment of: "How can you prepare when you're living on a food shelf/food stamp existence? Our family of 5 have no savings, owe tons of money to the IRS and student loans, and have a very small income."

Hi Lisa and All,

Because I have read so much in the Internet groups about government and politics I am convinced that there is a plot to starve as many U.S. people as possible. The economy is collapsing. Hyper-inflation is about to set in, meaning that the prices will go very high, like 10 times or more higher.

Food is most important. Why not stop paying on the student loan and use that money to buy food?

From BePrepared.com I bought some whole grains and beans, the ones that were lower cost when I ordered. I notice some are on sale now.

Locally I shop the grocery stores and dollar stores, for foods that are on sale like 50 cents for canned foods, or spaghetti and sauce at one dollar each. Check the grocery store ads, most of them have websites where you can check for what is on good sales.

I'd love lists that are on beginner levels, moderate, advanced. What I mean is that it would be nice to have lists that get you started and once you've passed that point, go on to the next level. Getting prepared can be so overwhelming that I think it stops people from trying.

I would also love a place where people can leave reviews about what products have worked well for them and what hasn't.

I look forward to learning from this site.
