How to make/build/construct root cellars

I want to know how to store fuel (as in gas for a car or generator). Is there any safe way, should I even try. What container/where to keep it/what are the temperature considerations…

What a great idea with the blog! I would like to hear more about water storage. I bought the 55 gal. barrels from your sight, but I don't know quite what to do next. How much bleach to put in, can they store directly on ground or do they have to be elevated, is storage in a garage okay, and so for? Thanks!

I'd love to see more information on water purification…what we can have on our shelves for 20 years that will still treat water and make it safe to drink. That type of thing would be great because you never know when you'll need to purify, but so many of the treatments don't have a long shelf life. Thanks!!

Fantastic blog, and me in charge of preparedness as part of the RS. I, like Debi, am interested in the alternative cooking, but more for an earthquake area—also what to do in preparation for that disaster that may be different than other disasters—besides turning off gas etc.

Would like a discussion of what is and isn't essential in a 72-hour kit. And the reasons why/why not.

been long time reading "backwoods" for info, then started "emergency essentials" for product. this is great site. its kind of a great wedding between info and product reccommend for me. this is perfect. i can and dehydrate. i may have a small lot, but i'm slowly replacing most plants with something that produces food. just about finished with my 2nd pond for backup h2o (4k gal). i keep clean h2o in house and rotate it. love the site….. thank you db nw pa.

I would like to see a discussion regarding the most appropriate place to store items for easy access…I worry about natural disasters that can collapse homes and make it difficult to access your stored water or foods.

We have some fierce soil around these parts and I would like some info on how to prepare soil for the seeds so I am not wasting time, effort and money.

I would love more information or ideas on how to have a food storage when I eat mostly raw and fresh foods, besides being a vegan. I do have some beans,rice and whole grains stored. I can't be storing foods I don't eat, because I wouldn't be cycling them.

How do you keep bugs out of your food storage with out chemicals???

I love your new blog and have added it to my "favorites". The color and design is very easy to read and pleasing to the eyes.

Specifically – I like your tips in using the products. I have many of your products – but don't want to touch my lt storage until needed. So, I'll be printing off your tips (e.g. butter preparation).

So topics and products I'd like to see… I fear that my medical preps are seriously lacking. The common medical kits seem rather wimpy. I'd like to be able to buy the bandages you can use after being shot or seriously cut (mass blood loss) and maybe some good books on home medical care.

Also – storage…Can you possibly carry the items that help with in-house storage (e.g. bed post extenders/feet).

I would love to know how to store water in mylar bags like they do for the kits. Could you fill small mylar bags with water, freeze, then vacuum seal? How long would they last? Seems they could last longer than bottles. Should there be clorox or colloidal silver added to keep it safe?

I think that water is a very important part of food storage. I feel lots of us don't store it, or not enough or not correctly. How about a water storage topic?

The quality of food has declined rapidly these past 30 years. With all the chemicals that have been added, artificial ingredients, and "refinement", how do we get good quality food?

Please discuss the treatment of lake, stream, or river water for safe drinking, and how long can someone treat new water for use before it becomes unsafe. This would be in an event that there was no longer safe running water available to humans due to some long term disaster.

I am trying to organize my family and extended family for emergency preparedness. I would like some suggestions on how to coordinate multiple families in preparing for disaster. I watched how quickly people changed during the Katrina incident and my extended family and I want to be prepared as a unit. What things should we store as a group?

After ordering several buckets of grain from your company, we thought we'd try ordering from another source and compare. Our local health food store had a "special" so we ordered a few bags, thinking we could put it in Mylar bags and seal it ourselves. Shortly after bringing it home, we discovered it was fully infested with weevils, and they have gotten into everything. I would like practical info on how to safeguard our supply from pests. And maybe rescue the rest of our stash.

I have a question about containers for storing water… When plastic is heated, it chemically alters the water making it unsafe. Is there a better way to store it?

I would like to learn more about water storage. With living on a community well we often have no water if there is no power or a leak somewhere. What's the best way to store water and how often to rotate.

I am so pleased about hthis blog and th information that we will be able to receive from it. I would be interested in anything that would teach us more on different ways to use our freeze dried foods and also what information you might have on solar ovens and how to use them to maintain the proper temperature.
