Although our stored or purified water may be entirely safe to drink, and definitely necessary for our health and well-being, in an emergency, it may not taste as appetizing as we would desire, especially for children. For this reason, it is wise to store milk, chocolate and fruit-flavored drinks and even MRE drinks to please the palate. These drinks will also meet some nutritional needs such as providing necessary calcium and vitamins A, C, and D. During an emergency, it may be important to get these vitamins through enriched beverages in addition to your foods. For warmth and comfort, there’s nothing like a delicious cup of hot chocolate, or many people enjoy the familiarity of milk or drinks flavored to remind them of strawberries, oranges, peaches, raspberries, grapes, etc. The sweet familiarity of these products can soothe anxious nerves in times of stress and produce relaxation and well-being. These refreshing beverages contribute to our energy needs as well as keeping us hydrated. There is a good variety available, even drinks for those who are lactose-intolerant, or who want to avoid sugar. Considering the importance of staying hydrated, it is wise to have on hand a variety of these drink mixes to encourage the consumption of liquids and to help meet overall nutritional and caloric needs, especially in stressful times.
