Emergency preparedness is important – don't expect anyone else to help you – it's your responsibility to help yourself.

I need to learn how to preserve fruits and vegetables…about the only thing I know how to do is freeze them!

Will be checking in often – thanks! Bellen

A good subject would be real critter control that works – from the eensy ones that get into your food to the big nasty ones that will gnaw through walls & containers to steal your food.

I need more information on what types of things are needed for different disasters, ie tornado, hurricane, earth quake. Thanks!

I would like if you wrote about grain storage and grain mill usage.

Welcome to the blogosphere! Glad to see you have started one as the articles on your webpage are well researched and informative. I expect the blog will be as well! Would love to see some suggestions for water storage during the summer, when 72 hour kits and car kits are often stored in hot temperatures. What are the best water containers to use to prevent plastic leaching into the stored water? Thanks!

I would like to see a discussion on how to incorporate dehydrated foods into everyday meals, including some recipes.

Like everyone else, the blog is a good idea. Although I haven't read every blog, I haven't seen much on home security or community watch programs . What would truely happen if something occurred that the trucks stopped delievering the goods to the local store for 4 days, a month , 3 months, LONGER?
Being prepared is more than water, food, sanitation… Personal security and community security should be on your also be on ones list.
Erin
Wow. Great page! Thanks so much!

Why should we be prepared and where do we start?

I would like to hear what a good item to include in an emergency kit – that you wouldn't usually think of. My son (who is autist) suggested a ligh weight chess set – "to help the mind stay busy and for entertainment to help you relax." I know this isn't an essential- per say, but this might help bring some comfort at a time of caos. What do you think?

This is the first blog I've seen that actually helps with determining what to put into your storage and then how to use it. Great work.
I'll be back often.

Good articles so far. Looking forward to see what's up in the coming months.

I'd like to see emergency preparedness information that applies to diabetics. Actually, I'm sure a lot of folks have particular diet requirements and are always looking for more nutrition information (like how many carbs are in an MRE).

Message to parents who don't want to scare their children. Long ago and far away when I was 7 (I am 62 now) my dad was stationed in Japan. Periodically we had to do an evacuation manuver. We would pack up stuff and head for the mountains. My parents made it such fun. At that time it was me and my year old brother. We always got to dig into the cereal sticks, vastly different that cereal bars or energy bars now, these were from old C rations. It was our special treat for being good in the car. Let the kids know that your prepardness is just in case something happens, offer them a treat, but make it something special. Have a drill where you might go a short distance (somewhere not usual) and have a picnic before you come home. They will enjoy helping get prepared. You can prepare some "prepardness back packs" to go along with your 72 hour kit. Make a check list of the items that can go into their backpacks and then put the rest into garbage cans you can throw into the back of the car, truck or suv. You can also make some pages about prepardness to color while in the car.

Good job with the blog! I'd like to see how to custom pack a medical bag for yourself and your family.

I would be interested in seeing articles on how to prepare/use freeze dried food storage items and on the next step after you have your 72 hour kit ready.

This is great. It would be nice to see all the info in some of the ways for newbies to gradually learn what they need to know about prepardness. How we can help neighbors who know absolutely nothing about prepardness. Perhaps suggest magazines to become familiar with.
Margaret
I would like to know how to manually harvest grains, how to store them. Meat preservation methods that do not involve canning. And how to make pet food during long term emergencies.
Sine
I agree with Anna, I would love to know more about electric grain mills. Which one is the quietest and which is the best one for which job.
Kim
I would be interested in learning how to store and purify water. Thanks for your new blog!

I live in a HOT climate. What is the best way to store enough water for a family of six? We don't have basements where we live and our space is limited. Any suggestions would be helpful.
I just discovered your website and signed up for your catalog. Looking forward to all your info.

After scanning through some of the blog posts already here, I know I will be coming back for more. We are getting ready to make a big move which will cause us to start all over again from scratch. Some topics I am looking for information on are:
1)Setting up an area to store my long-term-storage.
2) How to cook with all this dried food
3) Real stories from people who have gone through a situation where they needed their "preps" and how it helped get them through….what mistakes they made and what worked well.

I am excited about the new blog. I am always looking for ways to be more prepared. Thank you.

The Emergency Pack
Balancing Act:
Light weight, healthy foods, and proper hydration.
Emergenyc preparedness kits have to meet these requirements.
Suggestions and a blog on this subject will help everyone understand the life sustaining importance of the 72 hour pack. Keeping in mind that most situations that put people in need of a 72 hour pack last much longer than that. These packs are a training tool to help folks to understand that "Help" may not come in a real event, and that they can and should take care of their own.

While I have dehydrated foods by using the sun. I have never canned foods on the stove. The main reason is my stove is kinda high for a wheelchair bound person to take care of water bath canning.
So, it would be nice if you could discuss ways to can safely, but not by using typical stoves. I'm thinking more of canning outdoors anyway. As most long term disasters, would preclude us from using a stove indoors, unless it were a wood stove.
BTW, I love this new blog site and will read it a lot.

This will be my information highway. I would be interested in a cookbook of recipes using your products. Food storage will not do any good if you don't know how to use it. Thanks for starting this blog.
