INGREDIENTS:

4 3/4 C
Bread Flour or Emergency Essentials White Flour
2 tbsp
Margarine or Butter, softened
3 tbsp
Emergency EssentialsWhite Sugar
1 1/2 C
Sourdough Starter (purchase, obtain from a friend, or make your own)
2 1/2 tsp
Emergency Essentials Iodized Salt
1
Extra large Egg or 2 Small Eggs ( or 3 tbsp Emergency Essentials Whole Egg Powder, Mixed with dry ingredients)
1
.25 oz pkg active dry yeast or SAF Instant Premium Yeast
1 tbsp
Water
1 C
Warm Emergency Essentials Non-Fat Dry Milk
1/4 C
Emergency Essentials Chopped Onion (if desired)

DIRECTIONS:

  1. In a large bowl, combine 1 cup flour, (dry egg powder if you’re using that), sugar, salt, and yeast. Add milk, (egg, if using fresh) and margarine/butter.
  2. Stir in sourdough starter. Mix in up to 3 ¾ cups flour (depending upon the humidity where you are) to make a knead-able, somewhat firm but not hard dough.
  3. Turn dough onto a greased surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes.
  4. Place in an oiled bowl, turning once to oil the surface.
  5. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and allow to rise until doubled in volume—about one hour.
  6. Punch down, form into round loaves, and place on greased baking sheet.
  7. Allow to rise for another hour until doubled in size. Brush tops with wash of beaten egg and 1 tablespoon water. Sprinkle with chopped onion if desired, or with sesame seeds if you prefer.
  8. Bake at 375° F. for 30 minutes or until done.
  9. Gently remove to cooling racks and allow to cool before cutting.
