Directions: Mix 1/2 cup of Freeze-Dried Ground Beef to 1 cup of hot water. Let sit 5 minutes and drain off excess liquid. Yields 1/2 cup of ground beef for your favorite hamburger dishes, such as: casseroles, burritos, meat pies, tacos, stews, soups, sandwiches and much more.
We had this yesterday in some Hamburger helper, and it was great. I tasted some of it out of the can, and it tasted great dry as well.

admittedly I was skeptical about this product, but boy was I ever wrong! it is very tasty and I am looking forward to ordering more soon

Great for backpacking
When I was planning my first backpacking trip with my (very suburban) friends, I knew they wouldn't settle for the dehydrated meals that come in those little packs, so I searched amazon all day for something I could actually cook and prepare. This ground beef is perfect, very versatile and easy to use- just add boiling water and drain . Maybe a bit chewy and bland compared to the real thing(reason I gave it 4 stars rather than 5), but worth the convenience. Add a little hotsauce and you're set. Also, the 31ounce can is great if you're planning on using it often, I've done two 3-day trips with 2-3 people, and I've still got more than 3/4 of it left. Plan on using it on every trip from now on. I also plan on picking up some freeze-dried tomatoes, onions, and shredded cheese to add to my tacos- gourmet cooking in the forest? Why not? Love this website.

I had initially be hesitant to try the freeze-dried ground beef because of the cost however when the MyChoice cans came out gave it a shot since my husband is a "strict carnivore" and I wanted a real meat for our food storage. I use it in just about anything I would use regular ground beef in (as another commenter noted, the exceptions are things like hamburger patties and meatballs since this is pre-cooked it won't bind) I found this to be very nice with a good flavor and texture after re-hydrating. I didn't find that it really needed any additional seasoning. It takes a little longer to re-hydrate than some other freeze-dried products.

Not too shabby
Having experienced the freeze dried ground beef found in the new Hamburger Helper cups I have to say this product was not quite what I expected. However, I don't expect those cups to last 30 years on the shelf either. Texture wise, you will not be able to make hamburger patties or meatloaf from this stuff (unless you can find a way to bind it). However it should be fine for anything else requiring ground beef.
Taste wise, you will want to add spices to this stuff to mask the slight dog food flavor (I used taco seasoning). Once flavored, the beef is almost indistinguishable from what you'd get at any fast-food taco joint.
Preparation was a snap. I used 2 cups of beef to about 3 cups of hot tap water. Let it soak for about 15-20 minutes. Drained off the excess water, tossed it into a frying pan. Added one packet of taco seasoning and 2/3 cup of water. Heat on medium high and stir. This will easily fill up two people.
This stuff is expensive when compared to regular ground beef. You do not want to use it for every day meals. However as an emergency food I would recommend it to anyone.

Freeze dried ground beef
I was a bit hesitant to order the ground beef as there were no comments. However, it turns out that it is very good! I made tacos, added spice and sauteed it as I would as I would were it fresh ground beef. I could not taste any difference and used the leftovers a couple of days later for burritos and it was even better. I gave it a 4 only because I don't think I would use it plain. The texture is much finer than fresh ground beef would be. But overall, I know that we will be happy to have it in an emergency.
