Don’t confuse this milk with powdered milks like the ones you grew up with—and probably didn’t like. Don’t confuse this milk with powdered milks like the ones you grew up with—and probably didn’t like. Our instant milks are 100% milk, so they taste just like what you buy at the store. They don’t have a burnt aftertaste because they weren't cooked to remove the moisture. Instead, our milks are sprayed into a powder to allow moisture to escape, making them easy to mix, and delicious to drink. Our Emergency Essentials® instant nonfat fortified milk uses a double spray process, making it the easiest to mix of just about any milk on the market. It is also fortified with vitamins A and D. Drink it alone or pour it over cereal. Great for baking and cooking.

Reviews

Not the real thing - still really good

I bought a case of the non-fortified milk, a bucket of the fortified, and a 10# can to try in the fortified milk -- after having read a dried milk review comparing at least six brands (this was best reviewed).

While I won't agree that this tastes absolutely the same as 'regular milk'. And I most certainly could tell it apart from grocery milk in a blind taste test (I drink Horizons Organic Milk and to be fair I can tell the difference from store brand milk and a difference between each store brand's milk) -- the Provident Pantry Fortified Instant Dry Milk does taste better than any other dried milk I've had (hands and feet above the cannery milks). And IMHO it beat shelf-stable milks like Borden in a box, and coconut milk going the furthest to almost taste like grocery milk.

Comparing Horizons Skim to PP Instant Dry Fortified

Appearance - both are white with a bubbly layer on top after being poured. Both bubble equally when blown into with a straw (my kids favorite test), while the grocery milk retains the bubbles longer than the reconstituted dry milk. Both handle light similarly. At times I feel a slightly greenish tint exists in my grocer's milk and that perhaps it is only very slightly more dense.

Taste - While the Horizons is mild up front with a slight sweetness on the tongue as an aftertaste, the Provident Pantry milk has a slight musky powdered sweetness going down with a stronger sweetness and mild powdered note at the finish. My second and third sip weren't as much of a shock once i'd finished the glass of 'regular' grocery milk.

Note: I mixed 1 level cup of powdered mix in a 1 Liter glass carafe with 1 cup of cold tap water from fridge, swirling and sloshing to mix thoroughly. Then added an additional cup, swirling until mixed, Then an additional two cups, shaking vigorously (while covered with press n seal wrap) to combine. (this method always worked with the large volumes of powdered formula we prepared for the kids when they were small). I let this sit in the coldest part of my refrigerator overnight and swirl/shake thoroughly before serving.

I notice when I finish a glass of milk very tiny particles of un-dissolved milk exist on the bottom my glass (much as little bubbles would cling to the side of any milk glass). Next time I'll have to purchase the pitcher to see if it improves on results.

For my family I may need to cut this with regular milk when accessible, or mix it with chocolate until they acclimate to the ever so slightly hint of powdered aftertaste. I drank mine straight from the glass during taste tests. It tastes great in my cappuccino (can't tell the difference though it doesn't whip as well) and I'm betting it'd be great in cereal too!

{Response from Emergency Essentials - Thanks for the review TexasTripletMom. This is indeed the real McCoy - 100% milk. I think you'll love the mixer pitcher as much as we do for mixing just about any drink mix.}

Best Milk I've Tasted!

I combine the dehydrated milk powder (1 part) with cold water (4 parts) in a container with a screw on top and shake it up well. You can either drink it like that or put it in the fridge overnight and it tastes just like regular lowfat milk. This is an excellent product and I highly recommend it.

Yummy Milk

So glad I tried this milk! I actually like it better than the 2% milk I buy at the store. I gave it to my girls and they did not notice the difference! I added a bit of chocolate syrup and it was great. Great comfort food to have in your storage. Would suggest adding a bit more powder than the instructions on the can and refridge over night! All the milk I drink now!!

not fresh but still good

OK, so no dried milk is going to taste like fresh--if you go in expecting that, you'll be disappointed. But this is good. I took all the advice I could find on line about maximizing taste: I mixed it in the mixer pitcher, chilled thoroughly before drinking, stored in glass jar, added a little vanilla. I now only put vanilla if I want a "malted" flavor. It's not at all difficult to get use to--I'm finishing off the can I opened to use when we had radiation in our milk supply. Great for cooking, not bad for drinking! I'll definitely order more!

Good stuff!

I am pleasantly surprised. This is good stuff! I've never been a huge fan of dried foods (although food storage is more important than gourmet taste these days, a fact of which I am fully aware), and I generally prefer a little "fat" in my milk, as in 2%. But this is really good. I'm drinking it just because I like it. I will admit I make it with a little less water than called for, but I really like it! Thank you!

This Milk is Great

I mixed this milk as instructed; however, I also added some sugar, vanilla flavoring and ice and mixed it in the blender and it tasted just like a milkshake. I guess you could use whatever flavoring you want for your taste. I served it at a Presentation one night and a Relief Society Enrichment night to about 58 attendees and they all liked it.

Great Product!

My family loves this milk. I add a bit of vanilla and chill before serving. No one (outside our family) knows its powdered.

Delicious!

Just tried this powdered milk in cream of mushroom soup, it tastes delicious! This is too good to keep in storage, I just ordered another can. I'm going to use this on a regular basis, it saves me gas money by not having to buy fresh at the grocery store. Also, I only mix as much as I need, so no spoiled milk wasted. Remember to recycle the empty can, or wash it out & use with the lid to store items. Thank you for helping my family to prepare.

Excelent

We ran out of milk one night so we mixed up a gallon from my precious hidden can...We haven't used store bought fresh since. I was surprised as my wife and son are..lets say picky..and they love it. This tastes great and it's a good value.

Not what I expected

I DO NOT like powdered milk, so when I ordered the Nonfat Fortified Milk I was expecting it to taste just like all the other powdered milks I have purchased, Yucky! How pleasantly surprised I was with this product. It does NOT taste like real milk however, it's pretty darn close! "Kudos" to Provident Pantry for a great powdered milk. I will definitely purchase this in bulk for my pantry!

Fortified Milk tastes great!!

10 STARS ***** ***** This Provident Pantry Non-Fat Fortified Milk is EXCELLENT!!. Purchased both this & the Instant Fat Free to compare. The Fortified IS MUCH BETTER tasting than the Fat Free version. The fortified dissolves MUCH better with or without using the Mixer Pitcher. I've mixed it in a normal gallon milk container. Added the power and the warm water. Shook the container and let it sit in fridge for a few hours.
The taste is much closer to Whole-to- 2% milk. The Instant Fat Free version seems more like 1%-to-Skimmed milk.
I gave my jar to my twin sister who keeps buying the Gallon milk at the grocery store. She says her 2 daughters(14 & 20) don't realize it's 'CANNED milk'. They use it in cereal & other items. No one knows the difference.
I agree. I've never used powered milk. Once I used the Canned Carnation milk and NEVER used the whole can. It was horrible. This Fortified NonFat Milk gets 10 STARS!!!!!!!

THANKS PROVIDENT PANTRY for offering MORE than one flavor !!!

Surprised and very happy

We bought this primarily for emergency storage never expected to use it for anything but cooking for routine use. Boy were we surprised. My husband has been giving me "blind taste tests" and I honestly can't tell it from store bought non-fat milk. Of course it is great for cooking, but also for cereal, drinking, and most surprising... it makes a great latte with the steamer too. I fully expected that to be the one test it would absolutely fail. I was wrong. Highly recommend it. We get best results with the mixer pitcher and storing in the fridge overnight before use. We have two small pitchers, one ready to drink and one we use to mix after supper for the next day.

The Best

Tastes Great! I love milk and this is the best I've tasted. Nice full flavor. I like it better than fresh from the grocer. Remember to use cold water.

Best Powdered milk ever

I normally don't like powdered milk but this stuff is great. I agree with others that I'm going to start making this and not buy milk in the store anymore

Great surprise

I have to admit I didn't think I would ever find powdered milk I could drink straight from the pitcher, but this is it. I am picky and have been looking for a quality, drinkable powdered milk. This is it. It is creamy, not watery, and believe me, you don't have to "gag" this down. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

The best I ever tasted

I have always tried to have powdered milk on hand for cooking, as a money saver, but never could stand the taste for drinking. I never thought I would actually love drinking a powdered milk -- and I have been guzzling glass after glass, it's that good! My daughter loves it, too. This is a GREAT product that I plan to keep using from now on -- it saves money, with no sacrifice in taste. What could be better? The mixing pitcher that comes with the combo works great, too!

dry fortified milk

Neither my husband and I are milk drinkers, I use it just to cook with, gravies etc. I got so tired of always having unused sour milk in frig. So I ordered the dry milk. I mixed some up and had my milk drinking friends try it and they thought it was really good. Great! I will never buy milk from a grocery store again. Thanks Emergency Essentials!!
