They are clear so you can see at a glance what is in them. They line up or stack well depending on which type you have. The 2.5 gallon barrels are great for things like dry cat food, the grains that didn't fit in the 6 gallon bucket and that you want to use right away anyway, or rice. I have used these for years. The company that makes them will soon be selling replacement lids. I haven't needed those in five years, though. These things are tough.
