GREAT!!!!
Reviewed By:

My wife and I were unexpectedly caught in 8 degree weather one night, and luckily we had a pouch of Mountain House Beef Stew. It was quick and easy to prepare, and was much much better than we expected it to be. We had bought one for an emergency, but now we plan to buy Mountain House products again and again,...it really was that good!!

Surprisingly Good

I never had a freeze-dried meal before, just fruit (the strawberries are great), so I was interested in trying this out before buying a #10 can of it This was surprisingly good. These days I mostly eat freshly prepared meals - either home-cooked or non-fastfood restaurants - and when I last tried a supermarket frozen dinner (as I used to often eat in my youth) I found it inedible, so I was concerned about trying another type of “processed” food. I had heard many good things about Mountain House and two negatives. The good was that it was good - both taste and ingredients. I now agree with that. The pouch contents hydrated well - even though I used hot water from my office water-cooler instant hot water tap, and not boiling water as the package directions state. The first negative I heard was that the double portion was really only good for one. I found that not the case. While I ate the whole two portion package for lunch, it was really too much for that meal - more like a dinner portion. This is a filling stew, with small diced potatoes, beef, carrots and peas all contributing to a flavorful, beefy, and somewhat starchy mix. The second negative I heard was that Mountain House meals are too salty. I’ll have to agree with that, although the meal still tasted very good – it’s best to combine it with plenty of extra drinking water and also eat non-salty foods, like fruit, at the same time. It has a gram and a quarter of salt per portion - more than half your daily dose, so if you do eat a double portion for dinner you’ve blown your whole salt intake for the day. I’m giving this 4 stars instead of 5 because of the high salt. But overall I recommend this highly.
