Additional Info What type of mushroom does the Back to the Roots mushroom farm grow?
The mushroom farm grows gourmet Pearl Oyster mushrooms. They're commonly found in Europe and Asia and are used increasingly in a variety of cuisines for their velvety texture, smooth taste, and dense nutrient content.

What do Oyster mushrooms taste like?
Oyster mushrooms have a mild flavor that is very versatile when it comes to the food they complement. They have a delicate, velvety texture that pairs well in pastas, skewers, soups, salads, and anything else you like to put mushrooms in! They taste amazing, especially when they're so fresh, and can be eaten raw or cooked.

I don't have a green thumb...how easy are the mushrooms to grow?
As easy as 1) opening 2) misting and 3) harvesting... in just 10-15 days! It's so easy and our main supporters are kids that are growing their own food!

How long can I store the farm before I need to start growing it?
The farm will stay fresh in the box for months before you start growing your mushrooms. Make sure you keep your farm in a cool area/room that doesn't receive any direct sunlight (i.e., closet, bedroom). Once opened you just need oxygen, water, and light to activate your farm!

How long do the harvested mushrooms last for?
Since you've grown them yourself, you can store them for up to 2 weeks. In fact, gourmet mushrooms are rarely found in grocery stores because they’re extremely delicate and have a short shelf-life.

My mushrooms are dry, can I still eat them?
Cooking with dried mushrooms is extremely popular! Just soak them in warm water or your favorite broth before sauteing!

How many mushrooms will grow from the farm?
Each crop varies in size but you can grow at least 2 crops from one box. So far the going record is 10 crops from one mushroom farm! My farm grew a beautiful first crop but the second one hasn't come in--what's wrong?
Sometimes the mushroom farm puts out so much energy producing the first crop that it needs to rest. Try storing the farm in a cool dark place. Don't water it for a week or two; just let the farm rest. Afterwards, re-soak your mushroom farm for 12 hours and place it in indirect or filtered light. Mist both sides of your kit at least twice a day. You might get your second crop from the first side and with both sides open, your mushroom kit needs a lot more moisture. Each crop will come in more slowly than the prior one, but you can typically get 2-3 harvests from one mushroom kit.
