This filtration pack is extremely easy and powerful. All you have to do is drop the pack in any fresh water source. Produces approximately 12 fl oz of clean water. The Hydropack produces a safe, hydrating drink using Forward Osmosis. It also provides the highest level of filtration of any personal water treatment system because it uses a system of filter holes each only 5 ten-billionths of a meter! With a filter that fine, protozoa, bacteria and viruses don’t stand a chance. The clog-free filter wall allows for full hydration of 12-16 ounces in 8-12 hours completely hands free. NOTE- not for use in seawater or antifreeze.

Last Resort Passive Water Filtration System

I purchased the Hydropack to demonstrate forward osmosis in a class that I was teaching on desalination. The bonus was that the Hydropack would provide last resort filtration in an emergency situation.

Pros
* Simple with no moving parts.
* Passive filtration - no work required.
* Drink provides 110 calories.
* The system has a 5 year shelf life based on the expiration date on packaging.

Cons
* The semi-permeable membrane can be fragile. On my first test a pinhole leaked dark red fluid into the water. This gave me some concern that if I was in the field, I could be taking a risk. I would recommend inspecting the bag for any pinhole leaks before drinking.
* The flavoring isn't very appetizing and would not be a good source of water for cooking.
* It takes around 8 hours to provide 12 oz. of fluid. The Hydropack is not practical if you are on the move. It could be used during the night while sleeping to have water in the morning.

Overall the system provides a means to treat water. It's very cool to see the Hydropack in action - it's physics put to a practical use. I had the system on display at my work and people would stop by to see the bag fill up with water throughout the day. However, I would not rely on this system as my sole water treatment method for backpacking or emergency purposes. The Hydropack simply can't compete against a hand pump filtration system with respect to the time and amount of water treated.

{Response from Emergency Essentials - Thank you for your very thorough review. Another distinguishing feature of this system compared to our hand pump features is that it is filtering down to 0.0005 microns (5 angstroms) whereas filters and microfilters are between 2.0 microns and 0.2 microns. Although the process is slow, it has a much higher removal rate when you have the time to wait. We appreciate your review JamesLosAngeles!}

COOL

It's neat to watch these puff up over the hours. I have only tried one with tap water. Next spring, 'wild' water.

HYDROPACKS GREAT FOR BUGOUT,CAMPING

Im waiting to get these but I am completely stoked I got them on sale. These will be light to carry in your packs and can be dropped in any freshwater source due to its filtration system. It eliminates anything that would make you sick. These I give a 5 rockstar rating!
