  • Sport Solar Oven Cook-off: Sunshine and Some Lessons Learned

    Last Saturday, March 30 was our Sport Solar Oven cook-off. We couldn’t have asked for better conditions. The skies were clear with plenty of sunshine and temperatures were close to reaching 70 degrees.

    All locations reported that the oven easily hovered between 200 and 275 degrees.  As in past weeks, we tried new recipes to try and challenge the capabilities of the oven. Here are a few of the foods we successfully cooked:

    Unexpected Mishaps

    The Sport Solar Oven at our Orem was hit by an excited shopper. The pot lid opened up, and the oven lost heat—not to mention roast juices that splashed all over in the oven. After cleaning up the mess, they still were able to heat the oven back up and finish the job. We’re happy to report that the oven is doing fine.

    What did we learn from the cook-offs?

    Here are a few of the lessons we learned:

    • Put the Sport Solar Oven on the ground in a place where it won’t get trampled, run over, or bumped!
    • Solar ovens actually work! After trying more than 10 different recipes, they all turned out delicious and fully cooked.
    • Always have another option to cook your food in case there is no sunlight. Our dutch ovens and charcoal came in handy on the stormy days. As long as you have sunlight, the oven is a perfect source of cooking for a small group.
    • The Sport Solar Oven will work in cold temperatures. We experienced below freezing conditions and we still cooked a variety of meats, desserts, and baked rolls.
    • Everyone should become familiar with their solar oven and know how to use them before an emergency hits.
    • Save on your power bill and have fun at the same time!

    As you can see, the Sport Solar Oven can cook just about anything, not just bread. Get creative with it and let us know what you cook in your Sport Solar Oven.

  • Solar Oven Cook-off: In the Snow and Cold

    We are putting the Sport Solar Oven to the test every Saturday during March at our retail stores. Here’s our report from Saturday March 23rd.

    When we arrived early to prep, we saw there was SNOW! Luckily, the weather can change within minutes in Utah. The clouds cleared out for a few of our store locations, but the temperatures hovered between the high 20’s and lower 30’s.The stores that had limited sunlight put their plan B into action. They pulled out a Volcano Stove and whipped up sweet and sour pork chops and au gratin potatoes. We won’t let our customers go hungry!

    At the stores that did have sun we put the solar ovens out and got to work. This time most of the ingredients we used were food storage items. (See list below.) We made bread, pork chops with veggies, cinnamon apple crisp, and a cookie.

    Despite the snow and cold, the ovens still reached the 250 degree mark inside. The pork chops took 3.5 hours to cook and the desserts and bread only took about 2 hours to bake.

    *Food Storage Items Used in the Solar Oven Cook-off

    Solar Oven Pork Chops: Freeze dried (FD) Pork Chops, FD Green Beans, Chicken Broth, Spaghetti Seasoning, and minced garlic.

    Apple Crisp: Apple Slices (rehydrated), quick oats, cinnamon sugars, butter powder

    Au Gratin Potatoes: Dehydrated potato slices, sour cream powder, cheese blend, and a few other spices.

  • Solar Oven Cook-off: Saturday, March 16, 2013

    For those of you who couldn’t make it to our stores last Saturday, we cooked up another round of delicious food in the Sport Solar Oven. It was a beautiful day at all four store locations. The skies were clear and the average temperature was around 57 degrees. It was a perfect day for solar oven cookin'! 

    The Orem store cooked an amazing chicken pot pie using a mixture of fresh and freeze-dried vegetables topped with a homemade biscuit crust. They also baked a giant cookie for dessert. (A giant cookie, people! Can life as a prepper get any better?) The food was delicious! Cook Time: 2 hours

    The South Jordan store cooked diced chicken with cream of chicken soup and veggies. They also baked rolls seasoned with cheese and butter. As you can imagine, customers loved the samples. Cook Time: roughly 3-4 hours

    The Murray store cooked diced chicken with a mix of veggies. They baked fluffy rolls, perfect for dipping in their entree. Delish! Cook Time: 4 hours

    The Bountiful store cooked a BBQ chicken that was as tender as can be. They also cooked a delicious wild rice (with carrots) on the side. Can you say AMAZING? Cook Time: 4-5 hours
