  • Holiday Gift Pack Giveaway!

Update (11/19/2012) - This giveaway is now closed. Thanks for participating! We have a winner!

Update: If you have trouble getting your comment to appear, you can post as "Anonymous" or leave your comment on Facebook. We will pick a winner first thing Monday morning. Good luck to all!!

This holiday season, you can give a small gift (the 100-hour Emergency Candle in holiday red) and a big gift (the gift of preparedness) in one!

Many of your friends, family, or neighbors might not have the resources or information they need about preparedness and emergency supplies.
Today we're giving away a full set of Emergency Candle gift combos. That's 12 candles, bags, and bows. You could keep a couple for yourself, and still have 10 to give to family and friends! (Or you could give them all away, of course).
We suggest giving one of these Emergency Candle Gift Combos along with other preparedness information your gift recipient could use, like:
    • An Emergency Essentials catalog
    • Some of our Prep School modules printed out in a 3-ring binder or a simple folder
    • A printed out emergency kit checklist
    • Storm matches so they can light their emergency candle in any conditions
    • Other items you think might help them get started
To enter, take a look around our website (beprepared.com), and let us know what's on YOUR preparedness wishlist.

    Then just

    1. Enter the name of the product(s) you're wishing for in the comments
    2. Include your email address in your comment so we can contact you if you're the winner.

You can also let us know if you'll keep some of the candles or give them all away if you win. (We're not judging--I would absolutely keep two for myself; I don't own any yet).

    --Urban Girl (Sarah)

  • Urban Girl here.

Can you believe it’s almost the middle of November? Where did the year go? It seems like I was just posting about planting my garden, and now Utah has a foot of snow on the ground.

Here’s a quick update on what I’ve been up to since I last posted:

I got a car kit put together with a basic 3-day emergency kit and a basic car repair kit. I had a spare red backpack hanging around from my college days, and I had some extra first aid items on hand, as well. So I assembled those into the backpack, added some bottled water, and got some MRE’s and a Millenium bar combo to add into the kit. That covers most of the very basics; now I just need to add an emergency bag or bivvy, a headlamp, and some spare batteries.

I bought some fire extinguishers. We had a kitchen fire at my house last year, and no one could find an extinguisher, so they used powdered sugar to put it out. Luckily that worked, and the fire was extinguished before it forced us to evacuate. But now we can avoid scrambling for something to put our fires in the future.

I bought a few packs of hand warmers. Winter is long in Utah, and if I got stranded on the road, I would definitely want some of these readily available.

I also purchased a Tote-able Toilet with 2 Enzyme packets. Enough said, right?

So, that’s what I’ve been up to. What about you?

  • Just over one week after the devastation of Superstorm Sandy, snow from a nor’easter—a hurricane-like storm known to cause coastal flooding, coastal erosion, hurricane-force winds, and/or blizzard conditions—is delaying recovery efforts. In some areas of the region, the nor’easter has knocked out power where Sandy didn’t, leaving more residents without electricity to heat their homes.

Ice storms and heavy snow can be powerful enough to knock out power in many parts of the country. These blackouts can last hours or days. Luckily, there are space heaters available that can keep us warm at home, work, school, or other types of shelter without electricity.
Propane heaters made by Mr.Heater® can run safely indoors when operated according to manufacturer directions. These innovative space heaters use either disposable 1 lb. propane cylinders (like those used for camp stoves or lanterns) or 20 lb. cylinders (like those used for barbecue grills). They also have safety features that include tip-over and low oxygen shut-off switches. Here are some models we recommend for winter emergencies:

    - Heats up to 400 square feet
    - Perfect for large areas like great rooms, living rooms, studio apartments, offices, or shelters.
    - Depending on temperature setting, operates for approx.:
-1.5 to 6 hrs. on one 1lb cylinder
-3 to 12 hrs. on two 1lb. cylinders
-25 to 110 hrs. on one 20lb. cylinder
-50 to 220 hrs. on two 20 lb. cylinders
    - Low, medium, and high settings
    - Free standing or wall mount
    - Easy to carry
    - Battery or AC adapter operated blower fan
    - Tip-over and low-oxygen shut-off safety switches

    - Heats up to 200 square feet
    - Great for medium-sized areas like living rooms or offices
    - Depending on temperature setting, operates for approx.:
-3 to 6 hrs. on one 1lb cylinder
-48 to 110 hrs. on one 20lb. cylinder
    - Low and high settings
    - Fold-down handle for compact storage
    - Tip-over and low-oxygen shut-off safety switches

    - Heats up to 100 square feet
    - Powerful enough to heat smaller rooms or offices
    - Operates for approx. 5.5 hrs. on one 1lb cylinder
    - Compact and portable
    - Tip-over and low-oxygen shut-off safety switches

Whether you live in a large house or a small apartment, these heaters can keep you warm when the power goes out. See more Mr. Heater products at BePrepared.com.

  • New Yorkers gather around power strips to charge cell phones
in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.

Superstorm Sandy left millions of northeasterners without power, some of whom may have to wait more than a week before it’s restored.1 Lack of power to charge important electronic communication devices like cell phones, smart phones, and laptops are among the many problems caused by the lack of electricity.

Many people in affected areas are relying on generators to keep their cell phones and laptops charged, and Wi-Fi hotspots or businesses with Wi-Fi to stay connected to the internet. One major carrier has set up mobile charging stations around New York City2 and local officials in other affected cities have set up designated charging stations. Throughout these cities, people can be seen huddled around generators  Wi-Fi hotspots.
New Yorkers gather near a building with
    working Wi-Fi.

It’s no surprise that communication is a high priority in the aftermath of this major disaster. For those who know where to find power and internet service, it’s possible to stay connected. But many people are still without phone or internet service. To make sure you

always have power for your electronic devices, here are some items you may want

to add to your emergency kit:
The GoalZero™ Nomad 7m Solar Panel is a small, portable folding solar panel capable of charging devices through USB or 12-volt cables. This can charge a cellphone, smartphone, mp3 player, and other small devices. It also has an optional 12V car charger adapter. The 7-Watt solar panel charges a cell phone in 1-2 hours. It’s 6” x 9” x 1” folded and 19” x 9” x 1”

unfolded and weighs 13 oz. If you had to evacuate, you could easily carry it in

    you emergency kit.

The GoalZero™ Guide™ 10 Plus Power Pack allows you to charge NiMH AA batteries from a USB power source or from
the sun in as little as 1.5 hours using the Nomad 7 solar panel. It’s about the same size as a cell phone, so it’s easy to carry. You can use this Power Pack to charge a cell phone 1-3 times if the pack itself is fully charged. You can use the included rechargeable batteries to power other battery operated items.

It even has a built in LED flashlight that can run up to 20 hours  on a full charge.
Goal Zero™ also makes larger solar panels and power packs, some powerful enough to run a

refrigerator. Whether you use a smaller unit to charge your cell phone, or a larger one to power appliances or medical equipment, you’ll be better off in a major disaster if you have a way to stay powered up and  connected.
