As Kimberly P. alluded to, there are magnesium starters out there that DO NOT work, they are not pure magnesium, but an alloy. THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM! IT WORKS! But do yourself a favor, add a piece of hack saw blade to the chain to act as a striker and scraper in case you don't have a knife available. It's a simple piece of insurance.

one of my favorite firestarters
This is a very good item for people who may not have time or patience to learn more primitive ways of fire making. I give one to everyone I take into the woods with me. The magnesium shavings produce a very intense flame. They will cause almost anything to burn. Th Emergency Essentials sells these at a better price than anywhere else I've seen. Keep one in your glove compartment and put it in your pocket whenever you go on a hike. It may save you from spending an unexpected cold night in the woods.

I originally thought this fire starter was made in China, I was wrong and just listened to what someone even less informed than me had to say about it. I did a test run and was able to have a fire started in minutes. It works great!

An ok fire started
This was the first ever fire starter I received. It doesn't do bad, but with out an object like a knife it may be hard to get a spark or shavings off.
