Not just for lifeboats!
I've been a fan of Mainstay rations for quite awhile; tasty and less temperature-sensitive than MREs, making them the ideal food for vehicle emergency kits (what they were designed for!). I'd recommend storing them in a layer of bubble-wrap--the foil packaging is tough, but prone to wearing out at the corners if rubbed or jostled over long periods.

These seem as hard as a rock -but have no fear. I opened it, and they are moist, with a grainy cookie bar consistency, and easy to eat --just as you would a cookie. No utensils necessary. Mild, pleasant lemony flavor. Overall, very pleased with my choice. Great for the go-bag, for keeping in the car (in case you get stranded in winter snows), backpack for hiking. Also good as a supplement for your food supplies at home, in the event of a blizzard or other emergency.

I was surprised how good these tasted, almost like a dessert. Not too dry, and quite dense. I'm going to get more for my car.

Mainstay SOLAS rations
Got some of these for emergencies and broke some out to try them. 4 out of 4 people loved the flavor and we were actually shocked at how good they tasted. We also immediately noticed that they do not make you thirsty at all. Very rich in flavor, they really taste more like dessert that emergency rations.

I bought these for my emergency food supply a little more than a year ago. I wanted to buy more but just had to try them first. I found them to be much better than I had anticipated. My wife liked them too as well as my son in law (he eats everything though). They really do taste like a lemon butter cookie, very good texture. Not unpleasant to eat in any way.

Great emergency bar
It has a 5 year shelf life, an incredible tolerance to cold and heat, and a taste that approaches 'really decent'. What more could you ask for a brick of calories? I can't handle much sugar in my diet but this causes me no problems at all. It's true that it's weight is on the heavy side. However, considering that you can drop it in the trunk without worry makes it a worth-while purchase.
